Frequently Asked Questions:

1) Do I need any special equipment to sign up?

You do not need to have any special equipment to take part in the program but we do want you to dress properly for the occasion.  While there will be some time spent in the warmth of our lounge, we will spend a lot of time out on the ice. When we go out on the ice, you will want to be wearing warm stretchy clothing (jeans not recommended).  You will also want to bring a pair of gloves (you want a grippy fabric on the palm so that you can get a firm grasp on the broom when you are sweeping). Please bring a pair of clean indoor running shoes to wear on your feet; we will provide grippers (that provide you with more traction on the ice), a step-on slider (which you will use when you go to deliver a rock), as well as brooms for sweeping. Delivery devices will also be available for use.

2) Will I be able to join a league at Leaside when the program is over?

Most of our leagues are already full for the 2017/18 season so it is highly unlikely we can register you in a league for the balance of the season. However, graduates of the program will be invited to participate in various member-only activities at the club during the 2017/18 season. We will also provide an opportunity for you to register for a "spare only" membership at a special rate (details to be provided at the conclusion of the program).

3) What topics will be covered in the course?

Among the topics covered in the Discover Curling program are:

  • safety
  • equipment
  • how to deliver a curling rock
  • grip / releasing the rock
  • line of delivery
  • sweeping
  • weight control
  • how to play a game
  • etiquette
  • basic strategy
