Frequently Asked Questions
Leaside rents ice to both members and those who are not members of the club.
Leaside rents ice to non-curlers but for your safety and enjoyment, we will require you to have an instructor(s) who will provide a safety overview, as well as show you how to deliver a curling rock, how to sweep and how to play the game. Under no circumstances will we allow more than 10 people to receive instruction on a single sheet of ice.
The current charge for an instructor is $50 (1 hour of instruction), which is payable in cash on the day of your rental. If you are unable to bring cash and plan to charge to a credit card, you must advise the office at least 24 hours prior to the start of your rental. Please note that you do not need to find an instructor yourself; Leaside Curling Club will book the instructor(s) for you.
Leaside Curling Club is a facility with 8 sheets of curling ice.
Curling is a team sport with teams normally comprised of four members. In this case, each person throws two rocks in each end of play. But it is still possible to play a game of curling even if you don’t have exactly 8 players. You can play a game with as few as six players. In this case, each team would be comprised of three people (in which case two team members would throw three rocks each per end, and the third person would throw two rocks each end). Or you could have up to 10 people (ie: two teams of five players each) on a single sheet of ice. For a team with five members, two team members will throw one rock each per end, while the remaining three people will throw two rocks each per end.
The maximum number of curlers that can be accommodated on all 8 sheets of ice at Leaside at any one time is 80.
If you have fewer than 6 people in your group, please contact the office and we will discuss other options with you.
Ice is typically rented for a 2-hour period of time. Rates vary depending on the day of the week. We offer discounted rates to members as well as to school groups. Please call the office to confirm the rates for the date on which you are planning to rent. Please note that your rental fee includes all the equipment you will need to curl including grippers, step-on sliders and brooms. In addition to ice rental fees, additional charges apply if you require an instructor(s).
Leaside Curling Club is a very active club with over 1,000 members who play in regular leagues at the club. We will rent ice only on dates/times where our leagues have not scheduled games / events. In general:
- With very few exceptions, there is no availability on Sunday through Friday evenings (ie: 6 pm onwards) due to regular league play.
- There is often availability on Saturdays, particularly from late September through December. From January to April, we have many bonspiels/events scheduled at the club on Saturdays; if you want to book ice on a Saturday during these months, we recommend you book well in advance.
- During the week, we can often accommodate groups during the late afternoon (3:30 pm – 5:30 pm)
Please call the office to confirm if there is ice available on the day you are looking to rent ice.
To book ice, either telephone the club (647-748-2875) or send an email to [email protected] with the following information:
- date you are looking to rent
- time at which you plan to be out on the ice
- the number of participants / the number of sheets of ice you want to book
- telephone number at which you can be reached
- Whether you require curling instruction.
One of our office staff will confirm your rental details and fees, and then e-mail you a rental agreement. We will ask you to review the rental agreement for accuracy. Assuming all the information is correct, we will ask you to sign and return the agreement to the office, as well as to provide us with a deposit equal to 50% of the ice rental fee. The balance of your ice rental fee, as well as any instructor fees (if applicable), will be payable on the day of your rental.
When we e-mail the rental agreement to you, we will also send you a copy of our “Ice Rental Participant Release” form. This form will need to be reviewed and signed by every member of your group who is not a member of Leaside Curling Club before he/she goes out onto the ice (a parent/guardian must sign the form on behalf of children who are under the age of majority). Please note that we not require the release forms to be signed and returned to us before your rental date; it is acceptable if the participants sign the release form when they arrive at the club on your rental date (but they must sign the form before going out onto the ice).
Effective for the 2020/21 season, participants will also need to complete a covid-19 release; as well, all participants under the age of 26 are required to sign off on concussion awareness protocols as required under Rowan’s Law.
Please be advised that Leaside has a “Fall Policy”: in the event any person out on the ice should fall and hit his/her head, staff will call 911 and ask paramedical services to come to the club to assess the condition of the individual who fell.
Your rental agreement will stipulate the time at which you have access to the ice. Please plan to arrive at the club at least 15 minutes before your indicated start time; for a very large group, you may want to be here as much as 30 minutes earlier. This will ensure that everyone in your group has time to change into the shoes/clothes they plan to wear out onto the ice, as well as to sign the various release forms and waivers before they go out on the ice (if they have not already done so). Please note that if your group is late arriving and only gets out on the ice AFTER the start time stipulated in your contract, the length of your rental will not be extended and you will not be entitled to a pro-rata refund of your ice rental fees.
You must get prior approval from the office if you plan to arrive at the club more than 30 minutes in advance of the start time stipulated in your agreement.
It is about 5 degrees in our ice shed. We recommend that you dress in layers so you can easily adjust as required. Loose fitting, stretchy pants are the best option, as these allow you to move easily out on the ice. It is also a good idea to bring a pair of gloves.
The most important piece of clothing when it comes to curling is the shoes on your feet. We ask that every participant remove the shoes/boots they are wearing when they walk into the club, and put on a pair of clean, flat-bottom shoes (eg: indoor running shoes) to wear out onto the ice. This will limit the amount of debris and salt which is tracked out onto the ice. Outdoor boots, dress shoes or any footwear with a heel more than ½” in height are not to be worn on the ice.
Unlike a bowling alley, we do not have curling shoes available for you to rent/sign out for use during your game.
Protective head gear (such as a helmet), while recommended, is not mandatory for adults but is mandatory for children between the ages of 7 and 12. Please note that you are responsible for bringing your own protective head gear to the curling club.
Children ages 7 and older are permitted to curl. Children under the age of 7 are NOT allowed onto the ice surface under any conditions. Children between the ages of 7 and 12 MUST wear protective head gear/helmets when out on the ice. It is your responsibility to bring head gear/helmet(s) for your children; we do not supply these at the club.
Parents/guardians of minors must sign off on an “Ice Rental Participant Release Form” as well as Rowan’s Law concussion awareness resources and protocols on behalf of the minors before the children are permitted onto the ice.
At Leaside, we have a licensed lounge area which overlooks the ice. We have a fully stocked bar with a variety of beverage options including 6 taps for draught beer and cider. If you would like to have the bar open for your rental, please let us know ahead of time. Please note that there is no additional charge for use of the lounge immediately after your game.
No alcoholic beverages may be taken outside the lounge (ie. Alcoholic drinks are not permitted in the change rooms or in the ice shed). Also, you may not, under any conditions, bring your own alcohol to the club. If you are found to be consuming any alcohol which was not purchased at the club, you will be asked to leave immediately, without entitlement to any refund of fees paid.
We reserve the right to restrict access to the ice shed to anyone who appears to be intoxicated.
We will refund any deposit paid with at least 14 days’ notice of cancellation; alternatively, we will try to reschedule the date of your rental.
Leaside Curling Club is located at 1075 Millwood Road, at the intersection of Millwood and Laird, right beside Leaside Swimming Pool (part of Leaside Memorial Gardens). There is plenty of free parking in the area surrounding the club. Please note that the parking lot is a shared lot with the other facilities in Leaside Memorial Gardens (2 hockey arenas and a swimming pool) so events at the other venues may impact parking availability.
Leaside Curling Club can accommodate curlers and guests who are in a wheelchair.
There are washrooms and change rooms located in the lower level of the club.
There is no smoking permitted in the club. There is a designated smoking area outside the club on the east side of the building.
